Regional Peace and Security
This research cluster aims to further expand our understanding of the contribution of regional integration processes to peace and security as well as support the interactions between the United Nations and regional organisations/arrangements by addressing three areas of research:
- Co-operation between the UN and regional organisations
- Case studies on the contributions of regional actors to peace and security
- Case studies of regional approaches to peace and security studies
This research cluster has resulted in strong and unique collaboration with scholars and practionners worldwide. More in particular with the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping, United Nations Development Fund, European Union Institute for Security Studies and the International Peace Academy. Funding for the projects was provided by the governments of Flanders, Belgium, Canada, Portugal and Sweden. UNU-CRIS is also coordinator of a research project funded within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. Reseach undertaken in this cluster resulted in extensive collaboration, contacts and field research in many of the secretariats of regional organisations worldwide.
