Maria Cristina Macovei is a Project Researcher at the Comparative Regional Integration Studies Programme of the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS) in Bruges since 2007. Maria Cristina Macovei holds an advanced M.A. in International Comparative Social Policy Analysis issued by the Katholieke Universiteit  Leuven (Joint Master programme with CEPS/INSTEAD Luxembourg and Associated Institutes), and a B.A degree in Sociology from the Al.I.Cuza University Iasi, Romania. Her research interests include: the social dimension of regional integration, comparative regional social policy, the UN and the EU systems and regional social policies.  She is also a Ph.D. candidate (part-time external) at the Open University, UK. The focus of her research is on Multi-level Governance and the UN-EU Collaboration: Implications for Social Policy.

For the following 3 years Maria Cristina Macovei will be the Project Coordinator of NETRIS. The Network for Regional Integration Studies (NETRIS) is a project funded by Edulink, the ACP-EU cooperation programme in Higher Education. The objective of the network is to strengthen the research and training capacities of the partners in the field of regional integration studies, to stimulate mutual learning, shared practices and collective dissemination and encourage policy relevant research.
